WEATHER ALERT Monday - October 11, 2021 It looks like we may get some rain this week folks, keep those umbrellas handy one more time! FIELD NOTES Is it too early to say that we can't wait for June? It's week 20 and the last week of the farm share. We're really going to miss you all. This year has been one for the history books that's for sure. The labor shortage really hurt our day-to-day operations and let me tell you, it was a struggle some days. The rain we have received this past season and the lack of sun the risk certainly out paced the reward in terms of bounty. We lost field after field of crops, but somehow we made it all work. We have hope better growing conditions will prevail in 2022. The great thing about farming is you can always begin again. We sincerely hope you enjoyed the farm share this year. So much of ourselves go into each and every week. You've heard the term, "it takes a village" and that my friend is the truth. I want you to know our farm wouldn't be what it is today without your wonderful support. A big thank you to our 2021 members, each and every one of you. See you all next year! WEATHER ALERT Monday - October 4, 2021 It looks like we'll be having inclement weather every other day, be sure to have your umbrellas ready folks! FIELD NOTES Another 2.5" of precipitation last night and luckily the bulk of it is over. The fields are flooded or oversaturated depending on what part of town you're on and it makes it extremely difficult to grow, harvest, and get the actual product out. This season has been awful and it's one for the history books that's for sure. On a happy note both high tunnels have been cleared and turned over. We were able to prepare the soil and plant for our winter growing program. The lettuces and kales went in over the weekend and we'll finish the rest at the beginning of the week. Look forward to winter greens and staple vegetables over the holidays. Some of our fields have already been put to bed for the 2021 season. The month of October goes by so fast because we are closing things down on one side and ramping them up on the other. Before you know it we'll have our first frost and the cold will begin to seep in. So much to do before then. Lastly, only 2 weeks left (including this one), for the CSA farm share. Where did the time go! I feel like we just started the season when we were telling you all about it. We're going to miss you guys. We only grow with feedback though. How it went, what you liked, what you didn't like, and if you will be back next year? You can always message us at [email protected], we would love to hear from you! Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST

WEATHER ALERT Monday - September 27, 2021 The 10-day weather forecast is looking great, dry and cool! FIELD NOTES Flashback 2020: High Tunnel Winter Growing It's almost October and winter is just around the corner! There's only 2 more weeks of the farm share left and a little more than a month before the farm stand officially closes for the season. Again, it feels bittersweet. On one hand we get a little rest and and on the other, we won't see the folks we've shared this extremely challenging season with. One thing for sure, for us, it will go by quickly with all of the planning for next season. The fields are finally beginning to dry out and give our fall crops a break. We harvested sweet corn, broccoli, broccolini, and even spinach over the weekend, and it all looks amazing. I really wish we would have had normal weather conditions over the summer, we experienced so much loss. Both of our hight tunnels are cleared out and we're preparing for winter growing. It feels like we get another chance after the crazy season we went through. We should have fresh greens through March if all goes well, stay tuned. Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST
DID YOU KNOW: Baby Carrots Turns out they are either immature carrots, hence their small size, or pieces of larger, thin carrots that are cut into pieces. The latter idea came from Mike Yurosek, a California farmer who got tired of chucking blemished carrots away and started cutting and peeling the vegetables into tiny perfection. In 2010, carrot farmers got together and started promoting baby carrots as an alternative snack food — a successful campaign that has plenty of people snacking on carrots instead of chips. WEATHER ALERT Monday - September 20, 2021 The end of the week is looking unsettled, be sure to keep your umbrellas handy! FIELD NOTES It's been no surprise what a challenging season it's been and the fall pumpkin crop is no exception. The video above shows why you may see fall ornamentals rise in price everywhere, especially the Pioneer Valley. WHAT TO USE FIRST
DID YOU KNOW: Parsnips A relative of the carrot, parsnips are a super-hardy, cool-season crop that requires a long growing season and is best harvested after a few fall frosts. Parsnips are especially tasty in soups and stews, lending them a nutty, sweet flavor, but these root vegetables can also be enjoyed by themselves as a side dish. DID YOU KNOW: Kale Green juice and baby kale salads may seem like a modern sensation, but the crop itself is at least 2,000 years old. Ancient Greeks grew the stuff, writings from the pre-Christian Roman Empire mention kale-like cabbages, and the earliest American record is dated 1669. WEATHER ALERT Monday - September 6, 2021 The weather this week is looking pretty good, but keep those umbrellas handy toward the end of the week. FIELD NOTES Deere trouble Thank the maker we have 4-wheel drive in the John Deere. Luckily, it got me out of this mess. This is proof the fields are still way too wet for heavy equipment. Everything needs to dry out quickly, we need to get in there and farm hard for fall. There is still so much to do. We've been trying really hard to get our fall settings of spinach in the ground for over month now. It's either been too hot with no rain and the sprouts burnt up or it was all-out rain-ma-geddon and the seeds drowned and rotted in the soil. We're hoping this is the week. With all of the weather related things going on we've been a little down but our spirits were lifted this past weekend when we added mums and sugar pumpkins to the farm stand. The cooler weather felt good and we had that "fall" feeling. There's something cheery about it, I love this time of year :) Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST

WEATHER ALERT Monday - August 30, 2021 Last week Hurricane Henri, this week Hurricane Ida, please be prepared and bring those umbrellas folks! FIELD NOTES This week I put together a little video about what we've been dealing with in terms of our crop health and the weather. It's a little lengthy, but please give it watch. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - August 22, 2021 We're keeping an eye on the remnants of Henri, please stay tuned to email and social media for possible new information concerning pickup days. FIELD NOTES .Weather Channel First Tropical Storm Fred and now Hurricane Henri... it's been a rough week trying to seed fall crops, plant seedlings, or just get into the fields for that matter. The soil is saturated and we have more precipitation on the way. As I write this Henri hasn't made landfall yet and watching the weather forecasts is pretty unnerving. Some reports are saying 3 to 5" and others 5 to 8" depending on how it sets up. Honestly, I can't imagine even getting 3 to 5" with how the soil is right now... my fingers are crossed and we're all hoping for the best. It's been no surprise weather-wise how this season has gone. We are always talking about the risk vs. reward you have whenever you enroll in a CSA. Well folks, this is pretty risky at the moment. We do EVERYTHING in our power to bring you a well-round share every week but it's been increasingly difficult as the summer progresses. Our promise to you is that we will continue to work hard, keep moving forward, and bring you the best product that we can. Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST
DID YOU KNOW: Leeks Leeks have a mild, onion-like taste. In their raw state, the vegetable is crunchy and firm. The edible portions of the leek are the white base of the leaves (above the roots and stem base), the light green parts, and to a lesser extent the dark green parts of the leaves. The dark green leaves can be used in stocks and soups. LETS GET COOKING HOW TO CLEAN & CUT LEEKS Clean & Delicious | You tube A simple, clear cut tutorial on how to work with leeks! WEATHER ALERT Monday - August 16, 2021 Looks like thunderstorms through the end of the week, be sure to have an umbrella handy folks! FIELD NOTES Seeding fall spinach and beets with the MaterMacc Planter It's hard to believe fall is just a little over a month away. Pretty soon we'll be talking about pumpkins, straw bales, cornstalks, and winter squash. Speaking of winter squash you'll have spaghetti squash in your shares this week. It's an incredibly early harvest and a nice little sneak peek and taste of fall. We seeded spinach and beets last week and luckily it rained just in time. The crew and I started the process to setup irrigation to make sure there was enough moisture for those seeds to germinate. It's funny, that's always the way... setup irrigation and it rains. Oh well, we're just glad it did! Tomatoes and peppers are finally beginning to produce and we're harvesting by the buckets. Our wash pack area is absolutely full right now. Look for another round of canning tomatoes in a 20lb box coming soon! Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST
DID YOU KNOW: GARLIC The shelf life of garlic can go as long as a year or as short as a few days depending on how you store it. A properly stored whole bulb of garlic can last up to three to five months in the pantry. Once the bulb is broken, you can expect the quality of your garlic to decrease rather quickly. Individual unpeeled garlic cloves can last for seven to ten days in the pantry. LETS GET COOKING SPAGHETTI SQUASH 4 WAYS Tasty | YouTube Try all of them and find your favorite! more recipes:
