YOUR WEEKLY CSA GUIDE
WEATHER ALERT Monday - August 30, 2021 Last week Hurricane Henri, this week Hurricane Ida, please be prepared and bring those umbrellas folks! FIELD NOTES This week I put together a little video about what we've been dealing with in terms of our crop health and the weather. It's a little lengthy, but please give it watch. There is a lot of information here and may help bring a little awareness you may not find in your local grocery store, a good "behind the scenes" if you will. DID YOU KNOW: Potatoes Gold Rush miners in the 1800’s prized the potato because it prevented scurvy. Miners traded gold for the precious potato ounce for ounce, and for good reason. One medium potato contains 30% of the adult recommended amount of Vitamin C, the vitamin the body needs to prevent scurvy! WEATHER ALERT Sunday - August 22, 2021 We're keeping an eye on the remnants of Henri, please stay tuned to email and social media for possible new information concerning pickup days. FIELD NOTES .Weather Channel First Tropical Storm Fred and now Hurricane Henri... it's been a rough week trying to seed fall crops, plant seedlings, or just get into the fields for that matter. The soil is saturated and we have more precipitation on the way. As I write this Henri hasn't made landfall yet and watching the weather forecasts is pretty unnerving. Some reports are saying 3 to 5" and others 5 to 8" depending on how it sets up. Honestly, I can't imagine even getting 3 to 5" with how the soil is right now... my fingers are crossed and we're all hoping for the best. It's been no surprise weather-wise how this season has gone. We are always talking about the risk vs. reward you have whenever you enroll in a CSA. Well folks, this is pretty risky at the moment. We do EVERYTHING in our power to bring you a well-round share every week but it's been increasingly difficult as the summer progresses. Our promise to you is that we will continue to work hard, keep moving forward, and bring you the best product that we can. Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST
DID YOU KNOW: Leeks Leeks have a mild, onion-like taste. In their raw state, the vegetable is crunchy and firm. The edible portions of the leek are the white base of the leaves (above the roots and stem base), the light green parts, and to a lesser extent the dark green parts of the leaves. The dark green leaves can be used in stocks and soups. LETS GET COOKING HOW TO CLEAN & CUT LEEKS Clean & Delicious | You tube A simple, clear cut tutorial on how to work with leeks! WEATHER ALERT Monday - August 16, 2021 Looks like thunderstorms through the end of the week, be sure to have an umbrella handy folks! FIELD NOTES Seeding fall spinach and beets with the MaterMacc Planter It's hard to believe fall is just a little over a month away. Pretty soon we'll be talking about pumpkins, straw bales, cornstalks, and winter squash. Speaking of winter squash you'll have spaghetti squash in your shares this week. It's an incredibly early harvest and a nice little sneak peek and taste of fall. We seeded spinach and beets last week and luckily it rained just in time. The crew and I started the process to setup irrigation to make sure there was enough moisture for those seeds to germinate. It's funny, that's always the way... setup irrigation and it rains. Oh well, we're just glad it did! Tomatoes and peppers are finally beginning to produce and we're harvesting by the buckets. Our wash pack area is absolutely full right now. Look for another round of canning tomatoes in a 20lb box coming soon! Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST
DID YOU KNOW: GARLIC The shelf life of garlic can go as long as a year or as short as a few days depending on how you store it. A properly stored whole bulb of garlic can last up to three to five months in the pantry. Once the bulb is broken, you can expect the quality of your garlic to decrease rather quickly. Individual unpeeled garlic cloves can last for seven to ten days in the pantry. LETS GET COOKING SPAGHETTI SQUASH 4 WAYS Tasty | YouTube Try all of them and find your favorite! more recipes:

WEATHER ALERT Monday - August 9, 2021 All-in-all it looks like it's going to be a nice week, but keep those umbrellas handy just in case folks! FIELD NOTES Another dry week under our belts with plenty of sun. It helped move our tomatoes and eggplant along, so much so we are able to offer both in this week's share, but with good there is always a little bad. I can't believe I'm saying this after the July we had, but we can use a little rain to push our new fall plantings. It would be great for it to shower overnight maybe once every 3 days, just not 2 to 4 inches at a time. We shall see how the week unfolds. I just did a quick walk through of our leek and brussels sprout fields and they pretty amazing right now. Brassica seedlings were planted not too long ago (above picture) and they are hanging in there. We also, seeded fall beets and spinach and this where the needed rain comes in, we need it for germination. Fingers crossed. I'm not sure how many of you can veggies but we have 20lb boxes of tomatoes available now at the stand. They are perfect for sauce. There really is nothing like opening a jar during the winter months and making a big ol' bowl of spaghetti :) See you soon! Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST

WEATHER ALERT Monday - August 2, 2021 An amazing week on tap folks! FIELD NOTES We took advantage of the bad weather and seeded our fall crops! We're halfway through the farm share program, can you believe it? It's been an amazing ride with you all and we're looking forward to the next 10 weeks! How is it going for you so far? We'd love to hear your feedback. You can message us at [email protected] :) It's been slow going in the pepper, tomato, and eggplant department because of the rainy weather and no sun. The 10-day outlook though is looking prime with lots of sunshine and little to no, precipitation. This means we will finally dry out. Now if we could have a little happy medium that would be great. The good news is you'll have peppers in this weeks share. See you all Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday! Owner Harrison Bardwell WHAT TO USE FIRST
TIP: BELL PEPPERS The bell pepper is the only member of the pepper family that does not produce capsaicin, a chemical that can cause a strong burning sensation when it comes in contact with your tongue. The absence of capsaicin in bell peppers is because of a recessive form of a gene that gets rid of capsaicin. That’s also why some people refer to bell peppers as sweet peppers!
