Flashback 2020: High Tunnel Winter Growing

It's almost October and winter is just around the corner!
There's only 2 more weeks of the farm share left and a little more than a month before the farm stand officially closes for the season. Again, it feels bittersweet. On one hand we get a little rest and and on the other, we won't see the folks we've shared this extremely challenging season with. One thing for sure, for us, it will go by quickly with all of the planning for next season.

The fields are finally beginning to dry out and give our fall crops a break. We harvested sweet corn, broccoli, broccolini, and even spinach over the weekend, and it all looks amazing. I really wish we would have had normal weather conditions over the summer, we experienced so much loss.

Both of our hight tunnels are cleared out and we're preparing for winter growing. It feels like we get another chance after the crazy season we went through. We should have fresh greens through March if all goes well, stay tuned.

Owner Harrison Bardwell

WHAT TO USE FIRST
  • Kale - you want to eat your greens when they are at their darkest color, especially kale, you will always get the maximum benefit
  • Bell Peppers - don't wash until use, refrigerate in a plastic or paper bag keeping the end open, 5 to 10 days shelf life
  • Lettuce - wash, dry, place in a container with a paper towel on the top and bottom, refrigerate in crisper, 5 to 10 days shelf life
  • Carrots - store unwashed in a cool dark place, wrapped in a paper towel and placed in a plastic bag in crisper drawer, 2 weeks plus shelf life
  • Winter Squash - store in a cool dry place for up to 1 month
  • Potatoes - 3 to 5 weeks in the pantry, 3 to 4 months in the refrigerator

DID YOU KNOW: Baby Carrots
Turns out they are either immature carrots, hence their small size, or pieces of larger, thin carrots that are cut into pieces. The latter idea came from Mike Yurosek, a California farmer who got tired of chucking blemished carrots away and started cutting and peeling the vegetables into tiny perfection. In 2010, carrot farmers got together and started promoting baby carrots as an alternative snack food — a successful campaign that has plenty of people snacking on carrots instead of chips.

DID YOU KNOW: Parsnips
A relative of the carrot, parsnips are a super-hardy, cool-season crop that requires a long growing season and is best harvested after a few fall frosts. Parsnips are especially tasty in soups and stews, lending them a nutty, sweet flavor, but these root vegetables can also be enjoyed by themselves as a side dish.

Green juice and baby kale salads may seem like a modern sensation, but the crop itself is at least 2,000 years old. Ancient Greeks grew the stuff, writings from the pre-Christian Roman Empire mention kale-like cabbages, and the earliest American record is dated 1669.

WEATHER ALERT
Monday - September 6, 2021
The weather this week is looking pretty good, but keep those umbrellas handy toward the end of the week.

FIELD NOTES
Picture
Deere trouble

Thank the maker we have 4-wheel drive in the John Deere. Luckily, it got me out of this mess. This is proof the fields are still way too wet for heavy equipment. Everything needs to dry out quickly, we need to get in there and farm hard for fall. There is still so much to do.

We've been trying really hard to get our fall settings of spinach in the ground for over month now. It's either been too hot with no rain and the sprouts burnt up or it was all-out rain-ma-geddon and the seeds drowned and rotted in the soil. We're hoping this is the week.

With all of the weather related things going on we've been a little down but our spirits were lifted this past weekend when we added mums and sugar pumpkins to the farm stand. The cooler weather felt good and we had that "fall" feeling. There's something cheery about it, I love this time of year :)

Owner Harrison Bardwell

WHAT TO USE FIRST
  • Tomatoes - ripe, 1 to 5 days pantry and 5 to 7 refrigerator
  • Apples - best stored in fridge crisper drawer, counter up to week, best flavor eaten within 2 to 3 days

DID YOU KNOW: Apples
  • Apple trees take 4-5 years to produce their first fruit. A standard size apple tree starts bearing fruit 8-10 years after it is planted. A dwarf tree starts bearing fruit in 3-5 years
  • Apples will ripen six to ten times faster at room temperature than if they were refrigerated
  • It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider
  • There are more than 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the United States, and they come in all shades of red, green and yellow
  • The science of apple growing is called pomology
