FIELD NOTES

It's been no surprise what a challenging season it's been and the fall pumpkin crop is no exception. The video above shows why you may see fall ornamentals rise in price everywhere, especially the Pioneer Valley.

WHAT TO USE FIRST​

• Tomatoes - ripe, 1 to 5 days pantry and 5 to 7 refrigerator  
• Swiss Chard - 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator crisper drawer
• Parsnips - store unwashed in a cool dark place, wrapped in a paper towel and placed in a plastic bag in crisper drawer, 2 weeks plus shelf life
• Sweet Corn - best eaten the same day, try to use within 2 days, husked corn should be refrigerated, stored loosely in plastic or brown paper bag keeping the end open
• Winter Squash - store in a cool dry place for up to 1 month
• Onions - store in a cool, dry, ventilated place, up to 4-6 weeks, don't store with potatoes, they expedite shelf life

​DID YOU KNOW: Parsnips
A relative of the carrot, parsnips are a super-hardy, cool-season crop that requires a long growing season and is best harvested after a few fall frosts. Parsnips are especially tasty in soups and stews, lending them a nutty, sweet flavor, but these root vegetables can also be enjoyed by themselves as a side dish.

Reminder: pickup days cannot be changed, the day that was chosen on the enrollment form will be your day for the 20 weeks of the program
