These common names include English peas, garden peas, and even sweet peas.

FIELD NOTES

High tunnel tomatoes are growing by leaps and bounds!

It's Week 2 of the CSA! How did last week go? Were you able to use all of your veggies in your meal plan? We would love to hear all about it, please message us at csa@bardwellfarm.com :)

It's been a crazy-busy start of the work week! We prepped and planted our southern fields with winter squash and pumpkins. We know that sounds early but it generally takes that long to see seasoned fruit from the plants. We also put in more settings of brassicas, lettuces, and sweet corn to make sure we overlap our previous ones. This will ensure we have enough variety and quantity through out the summer for our farm stand, CSA, farmers markets, and wholesale accounts. We try to do this every 2 weeks.

June means we are busy harvesting. With all of the vegetables beginning to come in, we are hoping to raise our farm stand tent this week or the next. The space will give us enough room to display and shade all of our goodies from week to week. It'll also give us a place for the CSA farm share in case of inclement weather. Stay tuned to social media.

We're excited about this week's CSA because we were able to sneak strawberries and fresh mint into the share, we hope you are too! If you have any questions about any of the items, what they are, how to prepare or cook them, call us at (413) 800-5583 and we'll be happy to help!

FIELD NOTES
Picture
The crew harvesting fresh red and yellow spring onions

Welcome to the first week of the farm share everyone!

There are a ton of things going on at the farm any given day of the week. This is where we will keep you updated about all of these things including the progress of our shared investment.

It has been a really busy month finishing up everything for the CSA. The fields are prepped and planted. We laid miles of biodegradable plastic and planted thousands upon thousands of seedlings and seeds. We got out in the fields as early as we could and stayed out there as long as we could. We had so many after dark days, more than we can count and many more to come.

It's been a cooler than usual spring with several extreme heat days, some reaching into the upper 90s. Luckily, we have had just the right amount of rain in between those days to keep everything moving along. It's all shaping up to be a bountiful June!

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions what-so-ever about the CSA or your share, call (413) 800-5583 or email csa@bardwellfarm.com.

Thank you again for investing in our farm and we'll be seeing you soon!

FIELD NOTES
Picture
Is it too early to say that we can't wait for June? It's week 20 and the last week of the farm share. We're really going to miss you all.

This year has been one for the history books that's for sure. The labor shortage really hurt our day-to-day operations and let me tell you, it was a struggle some days. The rain we have received this past season and the lack of sun the risk certainly out paced the reward in terms of bounty. We lost field after field of crops, but somehow we made it all work. We have hope better growing conditions will prevail in 2022. The great thing about farming is you can always begin again.

We sincerely hope you enjoyed the farm share this year. So much of ourselves go into each and every week. You've heard the term, "it takes a village" and that my friend is the truth.

I want you to know our farm wouldn't be what it is today without your wonderful support. A big thank you to our 2021 members, each and every one of you.

See you all next year!

WEATHER ALERT
Monday - October 4, 2021
It looks like we'll be having inclement weather every other day, be sure to have your umbrellas ready folks!

FIELD NOTES
Picture
Another 2.5" of precipitation last night and luckily the bulk of it is over. The fields are flooded or oversaturated depending on what part of town you're on and it makes it extremely difficult to grow, harvest, and get the actual product out. This season has been awful and it's one for the history books that's for sure.

On a happy note both high tunnels have been cleared and turned over. We were able to prepare the soil and plant for our winter growing program. The lettuces and kales went in over the weekend and we'll finish the rest at the beginning of the week. Look forward to winter greens and staple vegetables over the holidays.

Some of our fields have already been put to bed for the 2021 season. The month of October goes by so fast because we are closing things down on one side and ramping them up on the other. Before you know it we'll have our first frost and the cold will begin to seep in. So much to do before then.

Lastly, only 2 weeks left (including this one), for the CSA farm share. Where did the time go! I feel like we just started the season when we were telling you all about it. We're going to miss you guys. We only grow with feedback though. How it went, what you liked, what you didn't like, and if you will be back next year? You can always message us at bardwellfarm@gmail.com, we would love to hear from you!

Flashback 2020: High Tunnel Winter Growing

It's almost October and winter is just around the corner!
There's only 2 more weeks of the farm share left and a little more than a month before the farm stand officially closes for the season. Again, it feels bittersweet. On one hand we get a little rest and and on the other, we won't see the folks we've shared this extremely challenging season with. One thing for sure, for us, it will go by quickly with all of the planning for next season.

The fields are finally beginning to dry out and give our fall crops a break. We harvested sweet corn, broccoli, broccolini, and even spinach over the weekend, and it all looks amazing. I really wish we would have had normal weather conditions over the summer, we experienced so much loss.

Both of our hight tunnels are cleared out and we're preparing for winter growing. It feels like we get another chance after the crazy season we went through. We should have fresh greens through March if all goes well, stay tuned.

Owner Harrison Bardwell

WHAT TO USE FIRST
  • Kale - you want to eat your greens when they are at their darkest color, especially kale, you will always get the maximum benefit
  • Bell Peppers - don't wash until use, refrigerate in a plastic or paper bag keeping the end open, 5 to 10 days shelf life
  • Lettuce - wash, dry, place in a container with a paper towel on the top and bottom, refrigerate in crisper, 5 to 10 days shelf life
  • Carrots - store unwashed in a cool dark place, wrapped in a paper towel and placed in a plastic bag in crisper drawer, 2 weeks plus shelf life
  • Winter Squash - store in a cool dry place for up to 1 month
  • Potatoes - 3 to 5 weeks in the pantry, 3 to 4 months in the refrigerator

DID YOU KNOW: Baby Carrots
Turns out they are either immature carrots, hence their small size, or pieces of larger, thin carrots that are cut into pieces. The latter idea came from Mike Yurosek, a California farmer who got tired of chucking blemished carrots away and started cutting and peeling the vegetables into tiny perfection. In 2010, carrot farmers got together and started promoting baby carrots as an alternative snack food — a successful campaign that has plenty of people snacking on carrots instead of chips.

FIELD NOTES
It's been no surprise what a challenging season it's been and the fall pumpkin crop is no exception. The video above shows why you may see fall ornamentals rise in price everywhere, especially the Pioneer Valley.

WHAT TO USE FIRST
  • Tomatoes - ripe, 1 to 5 days pantry and 5 to 7 refrigerator
  • Swiss Chard - 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator crisper drawer
  • Parsnips - store unwashed in a cool dark place, wrapped in a paper towel and placed in a plastic bag in crisper drawer, 2 weeks plus shelf life
  • Sweet Corn - best eaten the same day, try to use within 2 days, husked corn should be refrigerated, stored loosely in plastic or brown paper bag keeping the end open
  • Winter Squash - store in a cool dry place for up to 1 month
  • Onions - store in a cool, dry, ventilated place, up to 4-6 weeks, don't store with potatoes, they expedite shelf life

DID YOU KNOW: Parsnips
A relative of the carrot, parsnips are a super-hardy, cool-season crop that requires a long growing season and is best harvested after a few fall frosts. Parsnips are especially tasty in soups and stews, lending them a nutty, sweet flavor, but these root vegetables can also be enjoyed by themselves as a side dish.
