WEATHER ALERT Sunday - May 30, 2021 It looks like we will be receiving some rain days toward the end of the week, don't forget to bring your umbrellas in case there's a line folks! FIELD NOTES "til' dark day" Welcome to Week 1 all, it's finally here! Are you excited? Your food adventure is about to begin! There are a so many things going on at the farm on any given day of the week. This is where we will keep you updated about all of these things including the progress of our shared 2021 investment. The fields are prepped and planted! We laid miles of biodegradable plastic and planted thousands of seedlings and seeds. We had many cold winter days of planning and when the snow and rains stopped, we got out in the fields as early as we could and stayed out there as long as we could. There were so many "til' dark" days with more yet to come. We have a well-rounded crop plan this year and can't wait to show you the fruits of our labor. Just a short week ago we would have asked you to do a little rain dance, but we were blessed this weekend with much-needed rainfall. Things were really dry out there but our prayers were answered. The early warm weather has really helped pushed some of our crops along though and we're all going to enjoy the benefits! The long and short of it? It's going to be a busy summer! IT'S HAPPENING! We will be taking down the farm stand tent (weather permitting) the first or second week of November, but that doesn't mean we are closing. For the first time EVER we will be open year round! Along with our normal storage crops and farm to table goodies, we will have an assortment of other vegetables that will be grown and harvested directly from our high tunnels. Beginning November 17th we will remain open 3 days a week for all www.online-farm-store.com pickup orders! Tuesdays and Thursday's will be for pickup only, but Saturdays we'll be offering a mini market inside with fresh farm to table items to browse, including holiday goodies and more!

WEATHER ALERT Sunday - October 11, 2020 It looks like we may have some rain this week folks, keep those umbrellas handy! FIELD NOTES Jack-o-lanterns from the 2019 CSA Pumpkin Carving Contest This is the last week for the CSA farm share, 20 weeks have flown by, and it is always a little bittersweet. In a way we feel a bit of relief that we made it through the craziest part of the season and we all get a little break, but we are also sad that we won't see all of you until next year. We really appreciated your early commitment to our farm and can't emphasize enough how you all made it possible for us to weather this really challenging season. We are always at the mercy of something, mother nature, politics, pandemics, you name it, and that means there is an element of unpredictability to every season. Your membership brought so much stability to our farm. It helped us increase our growing acreage, hire more people, and invest in the infrastructure needed to make our farm more sustainable. A big thank you to everyone who placed their trust in us and helped our farm grow! Lastly, even though we will be taking-down the farmstand sometime in November, that doesn't mean we are closing. We will be open year round through our online farm store. You will be able to enjoy fresh greens, storage veggies, and all of our farm to table goodies right through spring. More details will follow, so stay tuned! Oh, and don't forget about the CSA Pumpkin Carving Contest! This week we will give participating members a large pumpkin for carving and a medium one to those who are not, and would like to decorate their step. Be sure to review the rules and dates below. DID YOU KNOW You can roast the seeds of any kind of winter squash, the same as you would for pumpkin seeds? You can! Clean the strings off by rinsing under running water, toss with 1-2 tsp of oil and season. Try seasoning them with salt, cumin, and chili powder. Tamari with a little wasabi powder is another yummy variation. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - October 4, 2020 The weather is looking pretty good this week but be sure to keep you umbrellas handy folks :) FIELD NOTES Incorporating lime into the soil in High Tunnel 2 Can you believe it's Week 19... where did the time go? It feels like we just got rolling and now it's almost over. One more pickup week left in the farm share, we're going to miss you guys. Well, the rain gods came through again because we have fresh spinach this week. It looks and tastes fantastic. We're so happy we were able to harvest before the CSA ends and include it in all of your shares! We planted High Tunnel 2 this week with spinach, arugula, and other leafy greens. It's all part of our first year growing through the winter. We're pretty excited! The 2nd Annual CSA Pumpkin Carving Contest rules are posted within Forkful this week. We hope you all participate! There will be prizes for best pumpkin design! Lastly, for those of you who would like to be on the 2021 CSA Farm Share call-list please let Rick, Sam, or Christina know when you are picking up this week. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - September 27, 2020 It looks like we'll finally be getting some much needed rain this week. Be sure to bring your umbrella folks! FIELD NOTES The Bardwell Farm Great Pumpkin Patch of 2020 We're heading into October this week, so where the heck did September go? Honestly, it's been a blur for my crew and I. We're doing so many things right now, cover-cropping, planting high tunnels, harvesting winter squash, and cleaning the barns. Even though we are preparing for winter, we are also preparing to be open year-round. It's new territory for us but we are really excited to begin this next chapter. Speaking of exciting, it's going to rain! AND MAN DO WE NEED IT! We are hoping it will push some fall crops along, especially our spinach. We know a lot of you have asked and we did include it in the shares a couple of times last year, but it's literally drought conditions in the field and it's so close. DID YOU KNOW Did you know pumpkin pie wasn’t served at the pilgrims’ Thanksgiving? Despite our modern-day obsession with pumpkin pie this time of year, it was nowhere to be found at the original Thanksgiving feast of 1621. Pilgrims wouldn’t have had butter or flour for making pie crust, let alone an oven for baking. Some historians speculate that the Pilgrims may have hollowed out pumpkins to fill with milk, spices, and honey for a custard-like dessert. WEATHER ALERTS Sunday - September 20, 2020 Another beautiful week on tap with no rain on your pickup days :) FIELD NOTES It's cold and we received a frost! We hustled and worked late all weekend to harvest vulnerable crops and cover fields with remay before the freezing temperatures set-in. Sensitive crops will be affected. It came early this year and is pretty surprising, we didn't receive a frost until middle October of last year. We've made progress installing more irrigation lines out back. This new system will help irrigate crops when there is no rain and in times of drought. We also spent a good part of last week windrowing all kinds of pumpkins for the Pumpkin Days fall festivities. Pumpkin Days kicked off last Friday and it was well received, be sure to stop by this weekend for all of your fall ornamentals, apple cider, and cider donuts! WEATHER ALERTS Sunday - September 13, 2020 Chance of rain with your pickup on Friday folks, be sure to bring that umbrella. FIELD NOTES No frost on the Little Jacks just yet, but we're seeing 38 degree overnight temps in the 15 day! Our days are turning chilly and it's been harvest, harvest, harvest. We are trying to get it all in before the frosts come. Speaking of harvest, Pumpkin Days begins this weekend! Our pumpkin displays will be up and we will have all kinds of fall decor like indian corn, cornstalks, mums (8 colors to choose from), straw bales, and most importantly, PUMPKINS! We'll have our traditional small, medium, and large carvers, sugars, gourds and the wicked popular Warty Goblins. New this year you'll see heirloom pumpkins, Little Jacks and Baby Boos too! All of the autumn goodies we all love will be here like fresh pressed cider, apple cider donuts, pumpkin bread, ginger molasses cookies, pumpkin spice and maple nut coffees, as well as fresh baked bread, local maple syrup, pumpkin butter, and apple maple jam! The holidays will be here soon! For those of you that are interested we are bringing in limited pre-order pasture-raised Thanksgiving turkeys from Mondego Acres Farm. WEATHER ALERTS Monday - September 7, 2020 No rain in the forecast, but be sure to keep those umbrellas handy folks! FIELD NOTES Mini Boos, Cannonballs, Little Jacks, and Warty Goblins are coming! We are scrambling this week because our main tractor is having motor issues forcing it out of commission. This makes things stressful and harder to get things accomplished, but we are fortunate that we have good relationships with other local farmers in town to have the ability to borrow equipment to help get the job done. Fall is in the air and Pumpkin Days will be here before you know it! The field pumpkins are beginning to turn orange early due to the drought conditions this year. We may have some issues with ripening but don't you fret, we will have pumpkins! We're very excited to get more winter crops into the high tunnels. We are planting winter greens such as winterbor kale, red and white russian kales, swiss chard baby greens, a plethora of spinach varieties, along with green and red lettuce varieties, arugula, and bok choy. WEATHER ALERTS Monday - August 31, 2020 The weather is looking pretty good this week, but keep an umbrella handy just in case folks! FIELD NOTES Cool early Morning harvest The first of September is tomorrow and with it comes the cool mornings and dry warm days. We are finally wearing our Bardwell Farm hoodies and it feels so good. It won't be long before the pumpkin harvest and Pumpkin Days begin, our favorite time of the year! Fall is just around the corner and we are busy getting ready for a number of things. The last of the fall plantings are going in and we are cover cropping, but something really exciting is happening in one of our high tunnels. We are beginning to plant our first winter crop. That's right, it will be the first year we will be open for business year round! We are still working on the logistics of how these products will be made available to you but the groundwork is in place. Stay tuned.
