WEATHER ALERT Monday - July 26, 2021 The week is looking pretty good, but keep those umbrellas handy just in case! FIELD NOTES Hazy start to the day! Another weather change as we move from cool and rainy to hot and humid. This coupled with the smoke from the the wildfires out west reaching the east coast and we're back in the soup again. The air is actually so thick you can smell and almost taste it. Just when you think things can't get any worse for the crew, it's kind of difficult to breathe too. The good news is we are beginning to dry out from all of the rain that we have received over the last several weeks. They weather we had over the weekend and the warmer temps this week should help things along. To speed up the process we even subsoiled some of the fields so the moisture can sink lower into the ground and it seems to be working. We lost so many of our crops this season because of weather, but if things stay on track and are consistent, the next settings of vegetables will be ok. On the positive note, our newer setting of broccoli and broccolini are looking great. Sweet corn is coming in fast and furious and we are so thankful for that. The next time you think about the weather affecting your day, think about it affecting your food and the food supply as well. Climate change is real. Enjoy the share this week folks! WEATHER ALERT Monday - July 19, 2021 The weather is actually looking pretty for this week and who's happy about this? We are! FIELD NOTES Rain rain go away... Welcome to Bardwell Farm Marina, I mean, week 8 everyone! Mother Nature has been throwing everything at us lately from extreme heat to excessive precipitation, over 10+ inches to be exact. The storms have been pretty severe too with dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning and flooding. We really need to dry out and we're hoping this will be the week to do just that. On-top of the weather the crew has been keeping the good fight battling weeds, trellising tomatoes, planting, working the tent, and farmers' markets. Despite the weather its been getting done and I'm proud of them. It's not easy doing this kind of work in these conditions. New to the share this week... fresh garlic and more sweet corn :) ENJOY! TIP: GARLIC The shelf life of garlic can go as long as a year or as short as a few days depending on how you store it. A properly stored whole bulb of garlic can last up to three to five months in the pantry. Once the bulb is broken, you can expect the quality of your garlic to decrease rather quickly. Individual unpeeled garlic cloves can last for seven to ten days in the pantry. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - July 12, 2021 Looks like more inclement weather in the forecast folks, be sure to keep your storm gear handy when picking up your shares! FIELD NOTES Saturday sunset with Allis The rain these past couple of weeks has been insane. By the time we finish today and tomorrow we'll probably be somewhere in the 5+ inch range! Normally we would be asking for rain prayers, but now how about a sun dance? We need to dry out soon and quickly to ward off disease and rot. And, the weeds after the sun peeks out... we don't even want to think about it. With all of this bad weather it's given us the opportunity to work in the high tunnels trellising peppers and tomatoes. We also continued work in our new wash/pack area. We were able to move our vegetable washing machine, tubs, and tables in there and it felt pretty good. One more step in the process completed. We're excited to have sweet corn and pickling cukes in this week's share, two of my favorite things! Give me some butter and little salt and pepper and I could live on them all summer long :) Enjoy! WEATHER ALERT Monday - July 5, 2021 It looks like we have the potential for thunderstorms throughout the week folks. Be sure to bring your umbrellas and stay informed as the week progresses. FIELD NOTES The farm stand is filling up with all kinds of summer goodies! Did everyone have a wonderful 4th of July holiday? We hope you did! If you ate too many bad things fear not, you can dive into this weeks share and we'll help you get back on track :) After scouting the fields over the weekend we are beginning to see eggplant and peppers, and we even picked our first field tomato on Sunday! We've been selling high tunnel heirloom tomatoes for a couple of days now, but there's nothing like eating a warm tomato from the field. Speaking of field crops, we're monitoring them closely for disease. With almost 3" of rain this past week this opens the door to this kind of thing. We're hoping to dry things out quickly before the next deluge comes. The benefit to all of this is you'll see more summer crops grow quickly with the 2-day heatwave we're supposed to receive. DID YOU KNOW: SHELLING PEAS The term ‘shelling peas’ refers to varieties of pea that require the pea to be removed from the pod or shell prior to use. Though shelling peas are one of the most popular types of pea plant in which to grow, they are often referred to by many other names. These common names include English peas, garden peas, and even sweet peas. The name sweet peas is especially problematic as true sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) are a toxic ornamental flower and are not edible. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - June 27, 2021 It looks like thunder-boomers again this week folks, be prepared! FIELDS NOTES Tractors make farmers right as rain :) Another week is in the books and it's felt like we're working round the clock. Up at 5, out the door before 6, work 'til dark, office work until ya can't keep your eyes open, and then it starts all over again...rinse, lather, repeat... yep, thats farming! Sweet corn is really showing growth now with the holiday coming in less than a week, leafy greens and brassicas are producing wonderfully, and we are getting more late season crops in the ground. While we keep up with cultivation, we’re watching field tomato growth. And, good news, blueberries are here! The heat really has boosted our heirloom tomatoes, we're seeing fruit the size of our fist. We have plenty of crops in abundance and we're picking fresh every morning before the 2pm heat kicks-in. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - June 20, 2021 Keep those umbrellas at the ready Tuesday, it's looking like rain! FIELDS NOTES Sunrise just before the kale harvest I can't believe we're almost through the month of June already. It's like I blinked my eyes and we're already planting winter squash and pumpkins! June is one of those months you go from 0 to 60mph and keep that pace until November. The heat has been brutal the last several days. We're getting into the fields to harvest and maintain crops early in the morning and then try to get out as quickly as we can before it reaches 90% humidity. The name of the game is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. It's also been a crazy past week in terms of repairs. Our delivery truck acted up and had to be towed from Northampton and our walk-in cooler has been playing temperature games. Every day I wake up and wonder what will we have to fix today. TIP: CAULIFLOWER Get your cruciferous veggies squeaky clean by filling a sink with cold water and then soaking them for a few minutes. Then, gently lift them out of the water, place in a colander and rinse again under a stream of more cold water. Drain, container, and store in the fridge until use. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - June 13, 2021 Looks like thunderstorms on Tuesday folks, keep those umbrellas handy! FIELDS NOTES Troy, Jona, Jonathan, and Navi planting brassica seedlings We're thankful that the temperatures dropped significantly this weekend. Not only were we racing against time to plant, maintain, irrigate, and harvest crops, we were battling personal dehydration and heat exhaustion. Several of our crew were definitely feeling the affects. With the temperature change of course we received lots and lots of rain, just about 4" total to be exact. We're still bailing out parts of the farm believe it or not. It was a lot of precipitation to fall in a short amount of time. On the plus side the heat and rainfall REALLY moved our crops along, so there were some benefits. One other disadvantage of the heat and rain are WEEDS and lots of them. DID YOU KNOW... Garlic, by cutting off the scape you are asking the plant to send all of it’s energy in to increasing the bulb size, rather than in putting energy toward flowers and seed. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - June 6, 2021 It looks like thunder-boomers will be in the forecast this week, don't forget to bring your rain gear just in case folks! FIELD NOTES Brassicas are looking great! We want to thank all of our farm share members for an exceptional first week! It was wonderful meeting new friends and catching up with old ones. Your excitement and enthusiasm is inspiring :) The heat wave we've been experiencing has been a blessing and a curse. It certainly has sped the crops along, but some of them so much so that they are beginning to grow too fast and bolt. We'll also have to irrigate crops if we don't get the rain they are calling for, all eyes are on the weather forecast right now. Staying hydrated and eating right has been a priority for the crew. It's brutal working in direct sun as well as the high tunnels and greenhouse. We're constantly monitoring and keeping each other safe. The high tunnel tomatoes love this heat and have taken off, almost doubled in size, and we're already starting to see baseball size fruit! Nothing says summer like a juicy well-ripened heirloom tomato. We can't wait to share these with you! While we're on the subject of hot weather, we've added all kinds of new frozen treats to www.online-farm-store.com, goodies like Barts Ice Cream, Dove and Haagen Dazs Ice Cream Bars, and Crooked Stick Pops. WEATHER ALERT Sunday - May 30, 2021 It looks like we will be receiving some rain days toward the end of the week, don't forget to bring your umbrellas in case there's a line folks! FIELD NOTES "til' dark day" Welcome to Week 1 all, it's finally here! Are you excited? Your food adventure is about to begin! There are a so many things going on at the farm on any given day of the week. This is where we will keep you updated about all of these things including the progress of our shared 2021 investment. The fields are prepped and planted! We laid miles of biodegradable plastic and planted thousands of seedlings and seeds. We had many cold winter days of planning and when the snow and rains stopped, we got out in the fields as early as we could and stayed out there as long as we could. There were so many "til' dark" days with more yet to come. We have a well-rounded crop plan this year and can't wait to show you the fruits of our labor. Just a short week ago we would have asked you to do a little rain dance, but we were blessed this weekend with much-needed rainfall. Things were really dry out there but our prayers were answered. The early warm weather has really helped pushed some of our crops along though and we're all going to enjoy the benefits! The long and short of it? It's going to be a busy summer!
