    WEATHER ALERTS
    UPDATE Sunday - July 12, 2020
It looks like another stormy week ahead so be prepared folks!
    FIELD NOTES
    Picture
Seeding the next setting of carrots!

It's been another crazy week in the field. Tropical storms, wind, thunder, lightning bolts (really close ones I may add), hot-humid, and rainy days. We're taking everything Mother Nature is throwing at us and making German Stripe Heirloom Tomato sandwiches with salt, pepper, and mayo!

We dodged a bullet really with this one. This Field Notes would have been a little different with a 4" rainfall and 30 to 50 mph winds thrown in. Luckily we were able to trellis our field peppers and stake tomatoes just before it hit and everything held up pretty good. As a farmer your crops are always one step away from disaster and there's nothing you can do about it.

With that said things are looking up! Those field peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant are looking amazing. We've also begun trials of of trellising cucumbers and more peppers in the high tunnels to have product earlier, later, and to protect them from the harsh summer conditions. We love it when a plan comes together.

It's 8:30pm, dark, and we are finishing installation of the brush washer by truck headlights... on to the next project :)

Enjoy the share this week folks, we have SWEET CORN!
    WHAT TO USE FIRST
    • Cucumbers - 1 week, unwashed, plastic bag, in the refrigerator crisper drawer
    • Turnip - 2 to 3 weeks, completely dry, plastic bag or air tight container, refrigerator crisper drawer
    • Lettuce - 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator crisper drawer
    • Squash - 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator crisper drawer
    • Herbs - up to 2 weeks, rolled in damp paper towel, ziploc bag, refrigerator
    • Cabbage - up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator crisper drawer
    • Sweet Corn - 1 to 3 days in the refrigerator

TIP: HOW LONG TO BOIL CORN ON THE COB
Fill a large pot with water.  Pour 1 quart of water per ear into your largest pot, add Kosher salt, then bring the water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, add the corn. Be sure you do not over crowd the pot. As soon as the water returns to a boil, the corn is done. This should only take 4-5 minutes. Remove from the heat and cover the pot with a lid. The corn can stay in the hot water for up to 30 minutes.

Cultivating the sweet corn... we need some rain to move it along!

    FIELD NOTES
It's only June 22nd and it already feels like the long hot summer. We are in a drought condition right now and our next best chance of any kind of soaking rain will be this Wednesday. Let's hope it happens because the fields are looking pretty dire. Normally we have sweet corn for the 4th of July but because of the lack of rain and the heat it will be delayed as well as many other crops.

On a happy note, we have a wonderful share for you this week. We're excited to have new offerings of mixed beets, baby scallions, and summer squash.

As I am writing this our new tent is being erected in place of the farmstand. We finally received the part we were missing and if all goes well we may have a new CSA setup soon!

Looking forward to seeing you all :)

High Tunnel 1 in all of it's panoramic glory!

    FIELD NOTES
We added some new folks to the Tuesday CSA, welcome all! Be sure to read everything through if this is your first week, there is a lot of info here.

We finally had a little rainfall last Saturday and it helped a bit but we need much more. We've actually had to irrigate the crops by tractor after hours most nights to keep the green alive. It's been hot and the soil is so dry it's like dust in the wind. Many thanks to my farming partners for lending us a hand. Farmers help farmers, that's what we do!

High Tunnel 2 is looking amazing right now after we trellised and clipped the heirloom tomatoes. It's looking like we'll have the earliest fruit of the season. Cucumbers and celery also went in the ground this past week too, so many new varieties and we can't wait to share them all with you.

So, how is your CSA going so far? We want to hear from you! Message us at bardwellfarm@gmail.com and drop us a note. Send us your questions too :)

    Enjoy the bounty this week!

    FIELD NOTES
Welcome to Week 1, it's finally here! Are you excited? We certainly are! Foodie adventure is calling!

There are a ton of things going on at the farm any given day of the week. This is where we will keep you updated about all of these things including the progress of our shared investment.

It has been a crazy month finishing up everything for the CSA and as you can imagine COVID19 made us rethink EVERYTHING. Although it has been difficult we feel it has made us stronger as a crew. We are proud to be the first farm in our local area to implement safety procedures not only for our farmstand, customers, and crew, but also extending those same methods to our CSA farm share and it's members.

The fields are prepped and planted! We laid miles of plastic and planted thousands of seedlings and seeds. It was many snowy and rainy days of planning and meetings. When the rains stopped, we got out there as early as we could and stayed out there as long as we could. There were so many dark til' dark days, more than we can count.

Despite our cold and wet spring our technique of using new products such as row cover and the incorporation of our new high tunnels, we are proud to be able to supply you with a wonderful bounty for your first week.

We need a rain dance, who's game? Things are really dry out there right now and we are hoping for rain. On the other hand the warmer weather has really helped pushed some of the other crops along. We're staying super busy keeping up with weeds and irrigating as much as possible.

You asked and we listened. Look for many new vegetable varieties coming this year. A big thank you to our founding members for all of the care and feedback you provided, it helped shape the 2020 season.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions what-so-ever about the CSA or your share, call (413) 800-5583 or email bardwellfarm@gmail.com.

Thank you again for investing in our farm and we'll be seeing you soon!

Please do not bring personal shopping bags to pickup your share. Bardwell Farm tote bags will be distributed when you arrive. A medium share will receive 2, a small share will receive 1, and a half share will also receive 1.

Important, please remember to bring these back when you return the following week because you will trade these in for new sanitized bags. We will repeat the same process every week.

If you forget your bag or bags, more can be purchased at $5 each, no exceptions.

    FIELD NOTES
    Picture
    We already miss you...

It's Week 20, the last week of the farm share and we're bummed.

I knew this day would come but we never took into consideration the relationships we would form, come to enjoy, and love week after week. We all shared our ups and downs, we joked and laughed, but most of all, we shared our love of food and where it comes from. Is it too early to say, we can't wait for June?

In honor of the last week and to show our gratitude, we are making this week's share much larger than normal. Feel free to swap items or pass along to another member if you have an abundance of one particular item in your pantry.

Don't forget about the CSA Pumpkin Carving Contest! This week we will give participating members a large pumpkin for carving and a medium one to those who are not and would like to decorate their step. Be sure to review the rules and dates below.

Lastly, we are in the planning stages of a possible soup/winter CSA for January and February. We are pretty excited about it and hope everything falls into place for the coming year. Until then, please let Rick, Navi or myself know if you would be interested.

Our farm wouldn't be what it is today without your wonderful support. A big thank you to our founding members, each and every one of you!

    Owner Harrison Bardwell
